They asked me lots of questions about the Soap Exchange, the main one, which they asked a few times, being, "but why would you do that?". I asked them if they were all sharing the same soap in their bathroom, their response was if they had only just realised that in fact they had been. Eventually they invited me in, I went to their bathroom to get their soap and when I returned they had put on a full spread for me, including, nuts, biscuits, cake and tea. I stayed with them for about an hour, in this time they were very open in conversation. They told me how they had to leave Afghanistan because of the war and how they had lost many family members and friends due to this. The man has English lessons weekly and was enjoying practicing his English on me. The woman spoke of her heart condition, even showing me the scars on her chest from surgery. The man expressed his fear of losing her and being all alone. Through simultaneously playing out the banal, everyday actions of drinking and urinating - we see the human body as a natural machine, whose existence relies on an endless physical cycle of consumption, ultimately leading to a kind of waste or excess. The plastic Mount Franklin bottle from which the artist drinks, links mass production and human consumption. What we passed there, will linger in the distance here Performance for Trade Route 55 Taking its name from the local urban highway, State Route 55, Trade Route 55 was a public art project which connected rich local networks in the North and South of Moreland, through establishing a localized, contemporary trade route along the Upfield line public transport and cycling paths. The video documents the ritualized swapping and physical relocation of Trading Boxes through a temporal, spatial and embodied exploration of place and space. A musical landscape is created, conjuring links to the historical and cultural roots of migrant communities in the City of Moreland, in the face of ongoing gentrification of the area. This performance was part of a wider project for MoreArt Public art show 2018 by Amie Anderson and Kate Davis.
